Designers: Paul de Ley
For the Bicker’s Island slum clearance area, the young architects Paul de Ley and Jouke van den Bout designed small-scale buildings: ‘minimum dwellings’ adapted to the existing urban layout and the wishes of the residents. They mark the end of the plans to build more and more offices in the city. This policy reversal was thanks to movements such as Provo, residents’ associations and pressure groups, which made their voices heard at the end of the 1970s. Bicker’s Island is the product of discussions conducted via local newspapers and the call to ‘build for the neighbourhood’.
