Designers: Hendrik Wijdeveld
Wijdeveld made a name for himself with fanciful and visionary designs for the city. This was his solution for the chaotic city, the result of spontaneous expansion. The dark tangle of roads and construction visualises Amsterdam with five million inhabitants. By contrast with this amorphous ‘inkblot’, Wijdeveld drew a perfect geometrical figure. In the middle lies the old city like a monument, with the road network running around it in circles, transected at regular intervals by green parks. The clear-cut simplicity of this expansion plan simultaneously belies its radicalism.
