Core houses

Gerrit Rietveld made efforts to have this idea implemented for almost his entire working life: an element which can be prefabricated containing stairs, toilet, shower and kitchen. This core forms the basis of high-quality, affordable housing for the working class. The ‘core house’ concept was never realised, but it certainly demonstrates Rietveld’s stubborn commitment and his great technical and spatial ingenuity. His series of core houses was one of the most headstrong quests to introduce standardisation and industrialisation in social-sector housing.
