Hofdijk residential development

Verhoeven’s objective is to reintroduce waterside living in Rotterdam’s city centre. His Hofdijk residential quarter is an island in the water. The neighbourhood is built up out of individual houses on bridges. But Hofdijk is more than an idyllic little neighbourhood; it meant a radical shift in Dutch urban planning, in reaction to the large-scale, impersonal architecture of modernism. The essence of this was marked by the realisation of a small-scale residential area on a human scale.
