On first acquaintance this seems to be a simple, ornament-free box. The architecture firm OMA achieved world fame in 1992 with this design for the Kunsthal. The building’s integration into the surroundings and the interaction between interior and exterior are its strengths. Here the concept of a continuous route – from outside to inside and within the building itself – is taken to the extreme in an ingenious way. Two public streets cut straight through the building, making it into an integral part of the city. This design fits in with the Dutch tradition of anti-monumental public architecture.
