De Peperklip housing complex

Client: Gemeentelijk Woningbedrijf Rotterdam

Designers: Carlos José Maria Weeber

With his design for De Peperklip (in the form of an opened-out paperclip), Carel Weeber took a stand against the housing complexes of the 1970s, in which the emphasis had been on individual wishes. With this extremely serial architecture he highlighted how the housing development of the 1980s was an industrial product without any form of individuality: social housing as an autonomous, metropolitan block. The honesty and radicalism of Weeber’s design produced fervent supporters as well as opponents who are dead against it. De Peperklip is a fine example of architecture that sparks heated debate about the direction the discipline is taking.
