It is no coincidence that the architect exposed the central heart. Evers regarded this ‘central dome’ as the midpoint of Rotterdam’s new City Hall. He was inspired by the impressive character of the domes of old Byzantine churches. Evers combined that central space with a flamboyant contemporary staircase. This created a huge reception hall where Rotterdam’s City Council can welcome visitors in grand style. Evers made use of old architectural styles, but he was also looking ahead and searching for novelty.
