Van stoel tot stad (From chair to city) is a passionate appeal to reconcile rapid urbanisation with the human scale. It was the outcome of Bakema’s innovative ideas about a key theme in architectural discourse at the time. He experimented with new media to draw the attention of a broad public to his message. Before it appeared in book form in 1964, Van stoel tot stad was a popular television series. In this original manuscript, Bakema was searching for the ideal formulation. As he sketched he tried to encapsulate his message in a single illustration.
