Amsterdam-South Extension Plan

He looks at his future city like a creator. This light pencil drawing indicates a breakthrough in Dutch urban planning. The ambitions are high: an urban development plan that can measure up to Amsterdam’s famous ring of canals. Instead of delineating the plan house by house, Berlage makes the massiveness of the social-sector housing the subject of the drawing. He arranges large residential blocks around the clear-cut, Y-shaped boulevard. It is a monumental Gesamtkunstwerk of streets, squares and urban blocks that continues to resonate powerfully in Dutch urban planning.
