The Cityless City

For Wijdeveld the world is a total theatre in which he can stage-manage his fantasies. This aerial perspective does not present a demarcated city, but a vast network of landscape and development between Gelderland and the North Sea coast of the Netherlands. The basic layout is an interweaving of motorways and free-standing, residential blocks amidst the countryside. This vision for the future presents a new world, in which everyone feels they are part of a new, makeable order. Wijdeveld sets a visual spectacle over and against the unimaginative, scientific urban planning.
